ST. JUDE’S SCHOLAR'S HALL
Rooted in History. Growing Together
.png)
Spanning 115 feet wide and 12 feet high, this mural tells one continuous visual story of St. Jude’s Scholars’ Hall.
Its beginnings, the people who built its foundation, the generosity that helped it flourish, and the students who carry its legacy into the future.
The story begins with the vision of Fred Gore, the founder of St. Jude’s. Fred is symbolically represented as an owl, reflecting wisdom, patience, observation, and his extraordinary ability to understand students who were often misunderstood by others. Known as the “Student Whisperer,” Fred’s owl watches over the beginning of the school and the children whose lives were changed by his belief in their potential.
From this beginning, the story flows into the magnificent elm tree, inspired by the historic tree that stood on the property when Scholars’ Hall was established. Once recognized as the oldest elm tree in Ontario, the tree becomes a powerful symbol of the school itself, representing strength, resilience, longevity, and deeply rooted history.
Within the trunk, four colourful handprints, drawn from the colours of the St. Jude’s Scholars’ Hall crest, represent the family behind the school: Fred Gore (founder), Fred's wife Bonnie, their daughter Cherylynne McKee, and a graduating student. Each hand represents a person who contributed to the school’s story and its continuing legacy.
The hands also communicate an important message: St. Jude’s was not built by one person alone. Its foundation was created through family, friendship, sacrifice, commitment, and a shared belief in the potential of its students.
Growing around the roots of the tree are tulips, symbolizing the generosity and financial support provided by Mark and Annette during a difficult economic period. Their support helped the school remain strong and allowed the school and its teachers to continue their work. The tulips therefore become more than flowers, they represent generosity, perseverance, and the nourishment that allows something meaningful to keep growing.
As the mural continues across the wall, the roots and branches transition into a powerful symbol of transformation: a large butterfly. The butterfly represents growth, change, confidence, possibility, and becoming who you are capable of becoming. It also serves as an interactive selfie wall, allowing students to stand within its wings and physically become part of the artwork.
The butterfly incorporates meaningful elements from the St. Jude’s Scholars’ Hall crest, weaving the school’s identity directly into the story of its students. A lion appears within the butterfly’s wings, symbolizing courage and strength. The elm tree is also incorporated into the wings, connecting the students’ transformation to the deep roots and history of the school.
Within the butterfly’s head and antennae, a silhouette of parents and their child represents the families who trusted St. Jude’s and believed in the potential of their children. Rather than standing apart from the story, this image becomes part of the butterfly itself, symbolizing the idea that every child’s journey is shaped by the people who believe in, support, and encourage them.
The butterfly therefore becomes a visual representation of the many forces that have shaped St. Jude’s: its founders, its families, its history, its community, and most importantly, its students.
As the butterfly spreads across the mural, a bright sun peeks through the branches of the tree, creating a visual connection between the school’s deeply rooted past and the possibilities ahead. The sunlight symbolizes hope, opportunity, warmth, and a future filled with possibility.
The tulips continue visually toward the butterfly and beyond, creating a connection between the generosity of the past and the opportunities it created for future generations. The mural then opens toward the light, with students moving forward, representing their journey beyond the protection of the school, prepared to spread their wings, pursue their dreams, and make their own mark on the world.
In this way, the mural does more than tell the history of St. Jude’s, it invites the current generation to step into that history and become part of its continuing story.
THE MESSAGE
The mural tells one continuous story:
A vision was planted.
A family nurtured it.
A community helped it grow.
And generations of students became its future.
Ultimately, the mural celebrates the enduring belief at the heart of St. Jude’s: when a child is seen, believed in, supported, and given the opportunity to grow, they can transform their own future, and, in doing so, help shape the future of others.
